Depression and Mental Health

I know this is kinda  subjective and sensitive topic. But I think that this topic is not given as much as attention as it should be given in the modern world. This world has been misused several times in our present generation. Especially young people, typically post that they are "#Depressed" to evoke empathy from netizens. But there are truly people out there, who are affected by this and they are the ones we need to focus on and help.

Wikipedia defines depression as "a mental disorder characterized by at least two week of pervasive low mood". I consider depression as a dangerous state of mind that I never want to be in. It usually takes weeks to months to get back to your normal activity and there is no way to "speed it up". It is a dynamically unstable state of mind and its very difficult to change.

I am a firm believer of rationalization. Everything could be rationally analysed through the laws of science.. But situations like death of a loved one, tragedies, that lead to depression are not something you can "rationalize" your way through. Depression in a biological sense is when thinking sad thoughts can have notable physical effects on your body. As a notable researcher Robert Sapolsky said " On a very simplistic level ,what depression is, is the cortex part of the brain having too many sad thoughts and getting other parts of the brain to go along with it".

There was a game online called "Depression Quest" which is like a text based game aiming to show how depressed people think. Seriously. It's a very controversial game. Check it out if you want to.

Anyways you might be wondering why I'm yapping about this horrible thing that everyone has heard of.

"Boring"  you might say. But trust me. It applies to each and everyone of you. All of us are vulnerable to depression just like death. So even though you might be happy, at a certain point in future, you might be so sad that you can't even look at yourself in the mirror.

"What me? You joking?  Impossible",

you may say. I hate to admit it but its a true fact. Let that sink in.

Now, what I don't like is shitty quotes on Instagram and FB like this:

These quotes just show 1% percent of what depressed people think about. It goes deeper than being poor or have no love interest. It attacks the fundamental identity of who a person is.
I'd like to say, help depressed people because you cannot cure them yourself, you can help them cure themselves.

Yes, it is true that we do go through sad and hard parts in our life. Doesn't mean that we shouldn't appreciate each and every moment of your life. We humans have a remarkable ability to thrive in harsh situations. When we passed through a hard time, we should come out learning something. That is my philosophy.

Anyways, this post was my way of thinking about depression. It isn't too much, but it gives me peace of mind. Guten Tag!
