On the Shoulders of Giants
This is the first possible general purpose computing device called ENIAC. It was developed in 1945, merely a 75 years ago.
And this is Fujitsu Fugaku, the Japanese Supercomputer which is currently the fastest computer in the world. I'm not even going to try to measure the differences between their computing speeds. No one can comprehend anyways
In just 75 years, we went from 0 to some crazy off the scale number! I know not many people bat an eye, but this is startlingly fast. Nothing has been this fast in growth in human history. Period.
I personally cannot understand how the ENIAC worked. It is not comprehendible by the mind of one average guy. But that's the beauty of human knowledge, it doesn't depend on "one guy". It is the sum total of all the knowledge we humans have ever gained.
Human collective knowledge and our ability of transferring knowledge from generation to generation gave us huge evolutionary advantage to other species. I know, many people have already realized this and say "So what? Aren't we smarter than them?". For them, I would suggest them to do this thought experiment. Imagine every one hundred generation ,humans forget about the existence of the wheel and every "wheel" in the world disappeared? Sure, our brilliant people in the world can rediscover them. How much time will be wasted by these "brilliant people" who will "rediscover the wheel". We would have never got to the point we are here now. Rediscovery is not the key.
I believe than the invention of the wheel and of that of the fire is one of the key skills that helped us survive. Similarly, we humans stand upon a body of knowledge worth thousands of years of human life and ingenuity. Some scientist in ancient Egypt whom you will never identify gave us the idea of pyramids. Pythagoras gave us his identity. James Watt his engine. We can find thousands of relatively modern inventions have revolutionized and are still changing the modern world.
All I want is to look back upon our history and pat on our backs. We deserve a little joy and gratitude.
Also Newton once seem to have quoted, "We stand on the shoulders of giants.....".
